HOW TO WRITE A FEATURE ARTICLE?

HOW TO WRITE A FEATURE ARTICLE?
Articles aim to inform, entertain and persuade readers. But most articles will do all three to some degree. Online articles require you to be able to grab the reader's attention quickly and hold that attention. Writing a great article isn't always easy and there are many aspects that combine together to make a great and smooth flowing article.

The following hints, tips and ideas will apply to all types of feature articles, this includes magazine articles, newspaper articles, blog posts, online article writing and Squidoo lenses.

Contents:

1. Purpose - The Mission of a Feature Article
2. Types of Text
3. Types of Feature Articles Include:
4. Structure
5. Title & Headline
6. Introduction
7. Details (The Main Article)
8. Conclusion
9. Language of Feature Articles
10. About The Author

Purpose - The Mission of a Feature Article
Feature articles are detailed pieces of writing which explore a range of issues, opinions, experiences and ideas. The purpose of a feature article will vary depending on the media it is meant for. Feature articles should appeal to the particular audience the article is targeting. For example if a magazine was targeted at middle aged women, then the articles, advertising and pictures within that magazine would reflect their interest in lifestyle, career, money, health and relationships.

Types of Text

Feature articles can be informative, entertaining, persuasive or they may simply satisfy the reader's curiosity about a particular topic. A feature article may provide more information about an important issue, offer an opinion about current affairs or simply present a personal or humorous perspective on modern day life. Unlike news reports which can quickly go out of date, feature articles have a more general focus and do not go out of date after a few days.

Feature writers are often regular contributors who have particular expertise or interest in their subject or topic. Article writers go beyond just the facts on the surface and add colour, detail, background and personal comment. The appeal of feature articles is usually the personal perspective on offer.

Types of Feature Articles Include:

1. Analysis and opinion on current issues.
2. Profiles of, or interviews with well known-people.
3. Humorous reflections
4. Personal experience or anecdotes.
5. Online articles.
6. Background information on local, national or international events.
7. Magazine articles.
8. Human interest stories
9. Newspaper articles.
10. Background information and personal opinion on your interest!

Writing Feature Articles

Structure
Like any form of writing a feature article follows a standard structure. While it may vary depending on your topic, a feature article should always include a headline, introduction, the main body and a concluding paragraph.

Title & Headline
The headline performs two important functions. An effective headline:
Grabs the reader's attention and persuades them to read the article
Highlights the main idea of the article.
Includes keywords (for online articles).

Introduction
The first paragraph outlines the subject or theme of the article, it may also:
Provoke the reader's interest by making an unusual statement.
Provide any necessary background information.
Invite the reader to take sides by making a controversial statement.
Heighten the drama of an event or incident to intensify its appeal.
Establish the writer's tone
Create a relationship between the writer and the reader.

Details (The Main Article)
The middle section consists of a number of paragraphs that expand the main topic of the article into subtopics. The usual components are:
Subheadings.

Facts and statistics which support the writer's opinion.
Personal viewpoints.
Opinions from authorities and experts.
Quotes and interviews.
Anecdotes and stories.
Specific names, places and dates.
Photographs, tables, diagrams and graphs.

HOW TO WRITE A FOOD RECIPE?

HOW TO WRITE A FOOD RECIPE?
Writing a recipe sounds easy enough, but if you’ve ever tried to write one – a good one – you understand how overwhelming the process can be.
Recipe writing for independent food bloggers is a multi-phase process that requires major multitasking. Bloggers not only act as recipe developers and testers, but food writers, editors, food stylists and photographers. And it doesn’t stop there. Marketing and PR can quickly turn into a full time job while trying to drum up coveted clicks to build a loyal following of readers.
While each phase of the food writing process is important, without a decent recipe, all of that multitasking doesn’t mean a thing. A poorly written list of ingredients and instructions can be the downfall of any food blog, and will overshadow beautifully photographed food, endorsements and accolades you may have received in the past.
Aside from the obvious reasons of offering readability, a well written recipe is important for marketing efforts, too. Your recipe is your product, and the more reliable your product, the more loyal your customers (blog followers) will become. With customer loyalty, comes word of mouth, which is one of the best forms of free advertising you can receive.
Once your recipe development and testing is complete, and the photographs have been taken, following tips will help you develop a voice, style and recipe writing template:
Make a template:
Designing a recipe template, before you even dive into recipe writing, will make the process easier and faster. Typically, recipes offer:
• Title
• Head note/description of the recipe
• Yield, cook time
• Ingredients
• Directions/method
• Notes (optional)
Begin by researching other recipes from reputable blogs and food sites. Observe how they divided their recipes into sections and make a list of design attributes that inspired you and what you want to offer your readers.
Don’t get cute with your recipe titles:
Cute doesn’t cut it in the blog world, where real-time search and SEO (search engine optimization) is one of the most important ways people search for and find your content.
For example, if someone is looking for a mint brownie recipe, they will most likely type “mint brownie recipe” into their favorite search engine. The chances of them typing your cute title, “Mr. Grasshopper’s Minty Brownie Surprise Bites,” are pretty slim. Keep titles as clear and precise as possible in order to maximize your SEO potential.
Give them a reason to keep reading:
The head note, or descriptor of your recipe, will establish the voice of your writing and entice readers to go deeper into your recipe and blog. Think about how much you want to share with readers, and if it’s relevant content.
Some blogs present wonderful back stories to recipes, taking readers on a journey and connecting them with the recipe, while others beautifully sum up a recipe in just a sentence or two. Regardless of the long or short format, each successful recipe preamble has one thing in common: it shows with words using the five senses, rather than tells with words that leave the reader with nothing.
Tasty and delicious, for example, may fit nicely into any recipe, but these words only tell, they don’t immerse the reader into the tastes, smells, texture or sounds of a recipe. Instead, ask yourself as you’re writing, “Why is it delicious? What makes it tasty?” Describe the recipe in ways that will make readers want to try your recipe: use briny instead of delicious, cobalt blue instead of pretty.
Keep your descriptions and stories relevant to the recipe. Don’t discuss how your five year old left their dirty socks on your pillow in the same post where a recipe appears, unless it inspired the recipe that follows the story.
Be sure your writing voice fits your audience. Are you writing to or for busy moms, college students, dads learning to cook, or the 30-something professional who longs for culinary school?
Don’t feed your audience empty calories:
Non-words refer to words that appear in a sentence, but don’t really offer value to the story. Words like “actually and really,” fill up space with empty writing calories and, when omitted, will make your writing stronger. For example, “He actually put that really big chocolate covered marshmallow in his mouth,” bores your reader with extra words they don’t need to waste time reading. “He put the big chocolate covered marshmallow in his mouth,” is much more precise, but still a little boring. “He shoved the chocolate covered marshmallow into his mouth, scraping the bits of brittle chocolate that clung to his lower lip with his two front teeth,” is a more powerful sentence.
Be specific about ingredients:
As writers, we sometimes assume that people know what we’re thinking; as if readers are already in our heads. Because of this, we tend to skip over important details in recipes, guessing the reader already knows what kind of butter or what type of salt to use. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. For the “don’t” readers, guessing what kind of salt or butter to use can make or break a recipe, so be specific.
Different salts, for example, have different sized crystal structures and are not interchangeable in most recipes. Kosher salt has a much larger and more irregularly shaped crystal than table salt, and requires more to equal the same results of table salt. Mix the two up in a recipe, and it may be too salty or not salty enough.
Tell the reader exactly what you want them to use: what kind of oil (vegetable, canola, olive, etc.), what kind of vinegar (balsamic, red wine, rice wine), what kind of oregano (dried or fresh).
The most common way to list ingredients is to list them in the order they are used. For recipes that have multiple parts, like a pie (pie dough, pie filling, egg wash), list all of the ingredients for each section together, breaking them up into categories. For example, if you’re writing a recipe for blueberry pie, your ingredients and directions might look something like this:
Ingredients:
For the dough –
For the filling –
For the egg wash –
Directions:
Make the dough –
Make the filling –
Make the egg wash –
Say what you mean:
The way you word measurements in your list of ingredients is important. One cup of chopped parsley is not the same thing as one cup of parsley, chopped. Think about where the word “chopped” is placed in the sentence:
One cup of chopped parsley means that you’ve CHOPPED the parsley BEFORE you measured it.
One cup of parsley, chopped, means that you’ve MEASURED the parsley BEFORE you chopped it.
The two descriptions will yield completely different amounts, so be sure you’re using the correct placement of your verbs and adjectives.
Recipe directions, the how-to of how-to’s:
Cooking directions (or method as it’s often referred to in the professional industry), should be as specific as possible, but not too wordy; wordy directions can seem overwhelming to readers at first glance.
Many recipe writers use short, incomplete sentences to keep the word count down to a minimum. For example, “Place the macaroni in the boiling water and stir so it doesn’t stick to each other in the pot,” can be cut down to, “Boil macaroni, stir to prevent sticking.”
The directions should also follow the order of ingredients. If the ingredient list states tomatoes, garlic, oil, oregano, the directions should list those ingredients in the same order, “Add tomatoes, garlic, oil and oregano.”
Graphic design – if they can’t read it, they’ll never come back:
The design of your recipe is just as important as how it’s written – if visitors can’t read it, they won’t print it, save it or ever make the recipe again.
You don’t have to have a degree in graphic design in order to make a recipe readable. A safe rule is to always use flush left text, or align left text, which means that all of the text lines up along the left hand margin of your column. Avoid centered paragraphs of text where every sentence is centered on the page or within a paragraph, which is difficult to read. Justified text, unless you’re a newspaper trying to cram as much text into a small space as you can, should also be avoided.
Keep your font colors readable as well, avoiding light fonts on a dark background, which can create a nightmare for readers trying to print recipes.
Recipe writing resources:
The more you develop and write recipes, the easier the process will become. You’ll also become a better writer by consistently following your template, and watching for non-words in your sentence structure.

!! Dushera in Bangalore !!!

Dushehra or Duseraa, whatever we call it.... same festivity has a difference in celebration styles when it comes to India. I recently saw and felt "dussera" and its celebrations in bangalore. Its quite different from what i have seen since childhood.
belonging from north India, i am used to eating Channa Dal , chawal with dahi vadaas on the occasion accompanied by paan in the night when many people go to each other's home and greet them. In Bangalore, however they offer prayers to God and offer bali of cock or goat to the goddess Kali for good blessing. That flesh is cooked at home and eaten as 'prashaad". they also offer langars where local people have rice, saambhar etc. This dushehra reminded me of the cultural diversity of the India....and brought me back to the memory lane once again........when i was a kid.burning crackers and eating sweets with my childhood friends.:)

MID DAY MEALS: A CRUCIAL PLAN TO ATTRACT KIDS FOR EDUCATION

As the NDA govt, has put up a plan long time back, to provide kids with one meal in case they attend the basic primary classes. When this plan was made , it was thought that the thought of food would attract the small kids towards school. which later happened too. But one or the other day, we see news from different parts of india.... like teachers are busy in cooking the melas as they have to feed the kids. and in some places schools are being run in a room where food is also being prepared. and apart from that, regular reports of kids getting hospitalized due to food poisoning and malfunctioning of the whole system are also not new.govt, should opt for packaged food. as
1.it removes maximum risk f getting contaminated.
2. Saves teacher's precious time which they can devote to educating the children,
3. It will also not break the concentration of kids.as they will look upon to their studies well
without any disturbance.

Moreover, plans like these should aim at realistic aspects. first of all govt. needs to employ rural people so that they can themselves send their kids to schools for education not for a mere meal. Without removing the root cause , this problem will always persist.

A SHOW OFF OF MONEY BY PUBLIC FIGURES

Recently, the 45 crore rupee "mukut" offered to lord Venkateshwara by one of the ministers became headlines in news. Our public figures make an image and deep and long lasting impact on masses. whatever they do or say leaves an impression on the minds of people. In a country like India, this vulgar showoff of money is like an irony for those who can't even eat three meals in a day. our so called opinion makers do not seem to adhere by what they say exactly. the people in power should act and and do whatever is ethical and in public welfare. On one had they become power players by snatching votes from common man and on the other hand, they fully extract all the benefits and fill their pockets. which is in contrast to what they are elected for. so celebrities . politicians and persons of importance should come up with an example for the masses. not the ones sucking their hard earned wealth ans showing it off .

ITS ELECTION TIME AGAIN... !!!

After 5 years of ruling of UPA government in India, here comes the chance for a change again, for us to choose our next Prime Minister :). Every time we think we r choosing someone who will initiate the much awaited revolution in economy of India. but sadly the multi party governments are busy in maintaining their power :( not eradicating the ills and evils in a democaratic country like india. for most we are destined to choose people who even don't deserve to be elected and some are even not eligible enough on many accounts to even stand in the elections:(.. .But its shocking to know that a very big part of candidates in indian elections come from criminal backgrounds and many of them even don't know the basics of democracy. So the person who doesnt know what india is all about , how can he or she rule a big and populate country like ours struggling to cope up with very basic problems of life. The very basic necessities of life are not here in india . A large population lives under the risk of contagious diseases. Even if we will look at our nearby places or our locality, we will find that in this age of cyber revolution and nuclear technology, INDIA is the country where one third of the population is not getting clean and safe driniking WATER, clean and spacious HOMES , and the three times MEALS in a day...:(.. So when you go to "polling booths"next time to drop your vote, please leave behind your misconceptions , just think logically and practically and give it to someone who can at least realize and understand the importance of the power in a democracy. VOTE IS A KEY TO THE BETTER INDIA, USE IT WITH THOUGHTFULNESS................ TO MAKE A BETTER BHARAT, A BETTER NATION:)...

recently one youth lost his life after entering into a competition of eating as much as pastries in one minute. his wind pipe got choked leading to hid death. saurabh sabharwaal, aged 23, an employee of nokia siemens company, died two days ago in this incident. media were just trying to highlight the pastry thing, but not the cause which lead to his death. one of which was eating in so much hurry ans secondly negligence on the part of company organising commitee.
different media channels were showing the news differently. on aaj tak, it was shown the guy used to work in a call centre, and they were showing the comments of hr head of nokia siemens..... enough to catch their diplomatic policy......and they were highlighting news like "MAUT KI TEESRI PASTRY" . this type of irresponsible attitude leads to kids n youngsters copying acts shown by the
media. how can we frget "SHAKTIMAAN"? that claimed lives of many kids......... so media plz be responsible enough to play the news onscreen...... dnt make it a sensation........like a saas bahu saagaa............... may god gv peace to the soul .........
